18–21 cm. The plumage is a glossy deep blue violet, tail is copper brown, black bill, black legs. Juvenile -soot brown, the upperparts are glossed green, the crown is glossed purple.

Upper Guinea forests of West Africa, from southern Guinea through south-eastern Sierra Leone, Liberia and southern Ivory Coast, to south-western Ghana

Monotypic.

Edge of forest, forests, riverine and gallery forest.

[edit] Behaviour

The diet includes insects, fruit (often figs), and berries.

It makes its nest in dead tree cavities. Approximately 3 eggs are laid.
