[edit] Identification

[edit] Distribution

South America; this species is only known from two specimens taken prior to 1852 labeled Bolivia, but borders have changed and descriptions of location were often unreliable anyway in that period (BirdLife Species Factsheet as read on 3/3/2008).

[edit] Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

[edit] Discosura vs. Popelairia

Sibley & Monroe (1996) place Wire-crested Thorntail (popelairii), Black-bellied Thorntail (langsdorffi), and Coppery Thorntail (letitiae) in the genus Popelairia. However, Howard & Moore (2003) and Clements (2008) and place these three taxa in Discosura, and Opus follows.
