Sexes similar. Dusky black eyepatch, crown, hindneck, and collar, pale grey face, throat, upper neck. Breast and lower neck rufous brown, heavily vermiculated with darker brown. White underparts and flanks with rufous brown scaling. Dark brown upperparts and tail. Dark grey bill, grey legs and feet, dark brown iris.

Philippines, Sulawesi, and Papua New Guinea.

This species is monotypic.[1]

Marshes, lakes, ponds, swamps, creeks, rivers and mangroves.

The diet includes grass seeds and snails; they feed at night and twilight by dabbling.

It nests in tree hollows. 10-11 white eggs are laid and are incubated for 28-31 days.
