11-13cm Male: Broad white supercilium, bold white wingbars, black streaking on sides, and yellow spot in front of eye.
Female: White chin. The black throat is flecked with white; otherwise markings more subdued.

Southwestern British Columbia south to southern California (scattered populations); Nevada; southern Idaho and Wyoming south to Arizona and New Mexico. Rare vagrant to the northeastern, midwestern, and southeastern United States with records in nearly every state.

Breeds in most dry wooded areas including coniferous, mixed, chaparral, scrub, oak and pinon forests.
