Identification

Length 18 cm
Upperparts olive-green with a bright red forecrown and black tail. The throat is red and is separated from the yellow belly by a black gorget.

Distribution

Eastern Africa: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and extreme eastern DRC.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Clements regards this as a monotypic species [1].

Habitat

Edges of highland forest undergrowth.

Behaviour

A shy and skulking bird.

Vocalisation

Similar to that of the Gorgeous Bushshrike, but more rapid.
