Formerly placed in genus Trochocercus as Trochocercus nigromitratus.
Two subspecies:

E. n. nigromitrata from Liberia east to Nigeria
E. n. colstoni from Cameroon east to Kenya, Uganda and S Somalia

Lowland moist forest and cloud forests.
