Identification

Distribution

Endemic to the mountains of New Guinea (Vogelkop to south-eastern New Guinea).

Taxonomy

This is either monotypic [1] or has two subspecies: insignis and pulcher [2]; some authorities place it in genus Euaegotheles.

This species has in the past been lumped with Starry Owlet-nightjar.

Habitat

Primary and secondary forest observed at heights around 600-1300m.

Behaviour

Roosts 3-4 meters above ground.

Diet

Forages on small frog and mammals.
