Length 11-12 cm. A plain waxbill with an orange bill.

Africa: Southern Gabon, southern Congo, Angola, DRC, Zambia, western Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, western Kenya, extreme south-eastern Sudan, Ethiopia.

Estrilda paludicola has six subspecies:1

  • E. p. ochrogaster
  • Highlands of extreme south-eastern Sudan and Ethiopia
  • Considered a separate species (Abyssinian Waxbill) by Gill & Wright2 and Sibley & Monroe3
  • E. p. roseicrissa
  • E. p. marwitzi
  • E. p. paludicola
  • E. p. ruthae
  • E. p. benguellensis

Grassy savanna, highland grassland and heath, and rank vegetation, often near water.
