Identification

22–23 cm.

  • Brown crown and nape with green fringes
  • Green face with dusky markings and white bare orbital ring
  • Deep reddish brown ear-coverts
  • Mid-brown breast and sides of neck lightly barred buff
  • Green underparts with reddish brown on belly
  • Green upperparts with yellow carpal edge and primary coverts, often with some orange
  • Blue primaries
  • Reddish-brown tail

Immatures don't have yellow in wing.

Distribution

South America: found in the eastern Andes of Colombia (Boyacá and Cundinamarca).
A restricted-range species, obviously extinct on the western slope of the eastern Andes (last recorded in 1913 as common). Threatened by habitat loss.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Cloud forest, second growth, elfin woodland and srubbery with areas of subparamo and man-made clearings.
Found at 1700 to 3400m.

Behaviour

Feeds on blueberries, blackberries, fruit of different bushes and trees, seeds and maize.
Breeding season from August to October. No other information.
No information on possible movements.
