Identification

17–18 cm

Distribution

South America: found in southwest Costa Rica and adjacent western Panama.

This is a monotypic species.

Beautiful Woodpecker was formerly considered to be a subspecies of this species.

Habitat

Moist tropical forest, forest edges and plantations. Observed at heights around 130m.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of insects, beetles, termites and larvae.
