Several authorities[1][2] now place this species in the genus Thalasseus.

Sterna bergii has six subspecies:[1]

  • S. b. bergii
  • S. b. enigmus
  • S. b. thalassinus
  • S. b. velox
  • S. b. cristatus
  • S. b. gwendolenae
