Endemic to Mexico; does not overlap in distribution with the similar Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch.

Two subspecies are recognized1, virenticeps and verecundus.

Green-striped Brush Finch has in the past been placed in genus Atlapetes and is now placed by some authors in Arremon.
