Ethiopia to Kenya and Tanzania.

This is a monotypic species.

Placed in Lonchura by Dickinson² and Gill & Wright³; this species has in the past been placed in genus Spermestes with scientific name Spermestes caniceps⁴, and more recently in genus Odontospiza with scientific name Odontospiza griseicapilla¹. In the latter case, this would be the only species in the genus.
