16–17 in (40–44 cm); 6.9–9.7 oz (195–275 g). Green with red primaries, crest and nape blue-black, chin, cheeks, neck, mantle, throat, and breast dark green, lower back, folded wings, and tail deep violet blue. White patch in front of eye, red eyering. Juveniles similar to adults but duller and with less red in primaries.

Diet includes fruits and berries, flowers, caterpillars, moths, and beetles.

The nest is a shallow platform of loosely interlaced twigs and 2 white eggs are laid. Both parents incubate for 22-23 days. The young fledge at 28 days.
