Identification

21 cm (8¼ in)

  • Dark brown head, mantle and back, the feathers having pale edges
  • Rufous outer tail feathers
  • Pale iris

Acacia savanna of northern Tanzania south east of Lake Victoria

This species has also been recorded in western Kenya.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1] and is the only member of its genus.

Habitat

Acacia savanna.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists of seeds, insects, including locusts, and fruit. They mostly feed on the ground.

Breeding

They are Monogamous colonial breeders, with up to 30 nests in one tree. Each nest is a cylindrical ball.
