A large swiftlet (13cm) with forked tail, dark brown upperparts, greyish rump, and underparts uniform pale grey.

In hand: lacking white rami and tarsus feathering of similar Himalayan Swiftlet.

Breeds in W Thailand, N Laos and E Myanmar. Wintering also in Southern Indochina to S Thailand.
Common in most of its range.

Accepted as full species by Clements and Sibley and Monroe. Howard and Moore treat it as a subspecies of Himalayan Swiftlet (like Volcano Swiftlet). May be closely related to Indian Swiftlet.
Like other Aerodramus Swiftles this species is often placed in Collocalia.
Monotypic.

Mountain forest, prefers wooded river valleys.

[edit] Behaviour

Feeds on insects, taken in flight. Foraging often in groups.
Colonial breeder on cliffs or inside caves. Capable of echolocation. Bracket-shaped nest of vegetable matter hold together with saliva. Lays two eggs.
Probably a partial migrant, but identification difficulties lead to lack of information about migration pattern.
