Distinguished from the mainland Western Scrub-Jay by its blue undertail coverts and long, heavy bill. Similar to all the Scrub-jays in size, behaviour, and coloration, but separated by range.

Endemic to Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park, California.

Formerly considered a subspecies of Scrub Jay A. coerulescens.
