[edit] Taxonomy

There are four subspecies:

  • B. j. affinis
  • B. j. continentalis
  • B. j. javensis
  • B. j. chaseni

B. j. affinis and B. j. continentalis are considered a separate species, (Blyth's Frogmouth B. affinis) by Sibley & Monroe (1993, 1996) and BirdLife (2008). Additionally, Batrachostomus chaseni (Palawan Frogmouth) has also been proposed as another full species. If the split of those two species were to be widely accepted, the remaining Javan Frogmouth would be limited in range to Java.
