Forpus crassirostris

Identification

12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)

  • Green overall plumage
  • Underparts slightly yellower
  • Horn bill (sometimes with pinkish wash)
  • Brown iris

Male

  • Blue just visible at the bend of the closed wing, on upperside of primaries and secondaries and under-wing coverts of the open wing, lower back, and rump

Female: all green, yellow tinge on head and flanks

Similar species

Cobalt-rumped Parrotlet averages slightly larger with slightly smaller bill but no real difference in plumage. However, this species seems quite different genetically.

Distribution

South East Colombia to eastern Ecuador, northern Peru and western Brazil, eastward to Rio Madeira

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Formerly included in Blue-winged Parrotlet together with Cobalt-rumped Parrotlet and Turquoise-winged Parrotlet.

Habitat

Lowland rainforest edge and secondary growth; originally it seems to have occupied mainly open river edge habitat. It is found mostly below 500 m

Behaviour

Feeds mainly on fruit and seeds.

Vocalisation

A zeet which is described as having a buzzy and screechy quality as well as a high pitch.
