Eastern Africa: Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi
Southern Africa: Botswana, Zimbabwe

Some authorities place this species in genus Ortygospiza.

Two subspecies are recognized:

• P. l. locustella:

• Angola to southern Tanzania, northern Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe

• P. l. uelensis:

• Western Congo to central Nigeria and western Kenya
