Asia: found in Russia, Siberia, Turkestan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Tibet, Korea (North & South) and Japan.

There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • U. s. sibiricus:
  • U. s. ussuriensis:
  • U. s. sanguinolentus:
  • Sakhalin, southern Kuril Islands and Hokkaido; winters to southern Japanese islands
  • U. s. lepidus:
  • Western China (south-eastern Gansu and southern Shaanxi)
  • U. s. henrici:
  • Mountains of western China (south-eastern Tibet to western Sichuan and northern Yunnan)

Sometimes included in genus Carpodacus.
