- Deconychura longicauda
Identification
17–22 cm (6¾-8¾ in) Plain-brown back, upper-side spots are limited to head and neck. Throat buff, underparts darker with spots to streaks. Bill dark upper and paler grey lower mandible, almost straight.
Variations
Throat color seems variable among subspecies.
Distribution
From Honduras in Central America to western Colombia in South America, and in a separate population east of the Andes from Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia east to eastern Brazil and the Guianas.

Seven subspecies are recognized[1].

- Tropical northern Colombia
- D. l. longicauda:
- The Guianas and Brazil north of the Amazon
- D. l. connectens:
- D. l. pallida:
- South East Peru to northern Bolivia and western Brazil (Mato Grosso)
- D. l. zimmeri:
- Eastern Brazil (Pará)
The first three of these are the Central American + Colombian subspecies, while the remaining four are found east of the Andes in South American lowland forest. These two groups have in the past been considered as separate species and they are supposed to differ vocally.
Habitat
Lowland forest both on dry ground and in periodically flooded areas.
Behaviour
Diet
During feeding often start at base of trunk working up in a spiral; then flies to a new trunk and start from the bottom again.
Their diet consists almost entirely of insects
