• Upperparts brown, black and rufous
• White-sided rump
• White underparts
• Black-spotted sides and upper breast
• Chestnut-brown crown
• White eyebrows
• Bill dark and slightly decurved
• Legs are pale
• Wings have narrow white bars visible in flight
• Tail white with broad black central stripe and grey edges
  

Sexes are similar
Juvenile is more brightly coloured

North-eastern Palearctic; winters south-eastern Asia to the Philippines and Australia.
Breeds in Siberia.
