[edit] Identification

Iris varies from dark to pale. Plumage varies from yellowish on Yucatan and western Mexico to greyish on the Pacific side (especially south from Honduras). Most birds have pale lemon-yellow supraloral.

Central America: found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica

There are 4 subspecies:

  • V. p. paluster:
  • Mangroves of north-western Mexico (extreme south-western Sonora to Nayarit)
  • V. p. semiflavus:
  • V. p. ochraceus:
  • V. p. pallens:

A further 6 spubspecies (nicoyensis, salvini, wetmorei, angulensis, browningi, olsoni) are not generally recognised[1].
Dickinson includes Providencia Vireo in this species, usually considered a subspecies of Thick-billed Vireo.

Forests, coastal mangrove forest and shrubland. Except for on Yucatán, only found very close to the coast.

Calls often consist of repetitions of a single sound. Song can be more varied, sometimes suggesting House Wren[4].
