10cm. A tiny woodpecker.
- Black top of head with white spots, male with orange-red spots on upper forehead and crown
- Pale buff-white lores and nasal tufts
- Brownish-olive ear-coverts barred whitish
- Pale olive-buff neck sides vermiculated darker
- Yellowish-green hindneck and upperparts with some faint olive barring
- Grey-olive underparts with fine olive barring
Juveniles are more heavily barred.

Foothills of eastern Peru.
A rare and little known restricted-range species.

This is a monotypic species.
May occasionally hybridize with Plain-breasted Piculet.

Humid tropical forest.
Occurs from lowlands up to 1000m.

No information about diet.
Breeding season probably from April to July.
Presumably a resident species.
