36 cm. Green. Male has bright red bill. Female has dark bill and is generally darker overall.

Mauritius; population has increase from a low of about 12 birds to almost 300, but the species is still limited to an extremely small area in one particular national park.

[edit] Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species which in the past has been included in Rose-ringed Parakeet.
A possibly former subspecies of this species used to live on Reunion but got extinct. This form is sometimes considered a full species, Reunion Parakeet Psittacula eques.

Upland forest and scrub.

[edit] Behaviour

Diet includes native plants.

It nests in natural cavities in native trees.
