Endemic to the Caribbean (West Indies): found in Greater Antilles, Bahamas, Cuba, Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • M. g. gundlachii:
  • M. g. hillii:
  • Arid coastal lowlands of southern Jamaica

Shrubby coastal areas with scattered trees, particularly small palm trees.
