Similar to the Pied Barbet, but does not have a black throat, and ranges do not overlap.

Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Some authorities consider this species to be conspecific with the Pied Barbet.

Tricholaema frontata is monotypic.
