Length 13-14 cm. A small lark with a short bill and white outer-tail feathers (latter obvious in flight).

Northern Africa and southern Asia.

Mirafra cantillans has four subspecies:

• M. c. marginata

• Southern Sudan to Eritrea, north-eastern Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya

• M. c. chadensis

• Senegal and Mali to Sudan and western Ethiopia

• M. c. simplex

• Western Arabia

• M. c. cantillans

• Northern India
