Head and chest grey with black lores, heavy black mottling on throat and chest. Female: head and chest grey, often with narrow, broken whitish to pale lemon eyering, throat pale gray to pale lemon.

Northeast North America and central Canada from Saskatchewan east to Newfoundland south to Minnesota east to New York, northern Pennsylvania, and in West Virginia. Rare to casual vagrant in the western United States.
Winters from Nicaragua south to northwest South America.

This is a monotypic species.

Dense shrubbery, brambles, and most brushy areas in fairly open wooded areas.

[edit] Behaviour

Nests near base of a shrub, close to the ground. Diet is mostly insectivorous.
