10cm. A distinctive piculet.
- Blackish top of head, male with feathers of hindcrown broadly tipped reddish-orange
- Buffish-brown rest of head
- Rusty-buff hindneck and neck side
- Brown to brownish-green upperparts
- Pale buffish underparts with some faint barring
Juveniles undescribed.

Found in northeast Bolivia and west-central Brazil.
Has a very small range but seems to be not uncommon.

This is a monotypic species.

Found in varzea forest (lowland riverine forest).

No information about diet and breeding.
Presumably a resident species.
