Coracina melas has six subspecies:^[1]

C. m. waigeuensis

Waigeo Island (New Guinea)

C. m. tommasonis

Yapen Island (New Guinea)

C. m. melas

Salawati Island and western New Guinea

C. m. meeki

Eastern New Guinea

C. m. goodsoni

Aru Islands (New Guinea)

C. m. batantae

Batanta Island (New Guinea)

It's sometimes placed in the genus Edolisoma.
