3.5 inches. Dark brown head with an erectile crest and pale supercilium. Grey-green upperparts, brown wings with yellow feather-edging and two whitish wing bars. Brown tail, grey throat, yellow breast and abdomen, pinkish bill. Sexes are similar.

United States, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Light forests, cultivation and gardens with trees.

Diet includes insects, spiders and berries.

The domed nest is made of plant fibre or leaves with a side entrance, placed by a tree fork. 2 white marked with rufous and lilac eggs are laid, and are incubated by the female for14-15 days. After 17 days the young fledge.
