The species was described as new to science in 2003. The species is part of the Brown Kiwi complex (Northern Brown Kiwi and Southern Brown Kiwi), and is morphologically very similar to other members of that complex. Also known as the Rowi.

The female will lay up to three eggs, each in a different nest. Both male and female incubate the eggs.
