[edit] OverviewExtreme eastern North Carolina. The Outer Banks is probably the best place in North Carolina to bird. [edit] Birds[edit] Notable SpeciesShorebird galore in fall, duck and geese galore in the winter, and much more! Also be sure to take a pelagic outing in late May from Cape Hatteras! You never know what you will see there! Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest wintering ground for Tundra Swan on the east coast. You can see THOUSANDS at one time!!!! Also Snow Goose are especially prevalent, you may see 10,000 or more at once!! Ducks are very common too. You can see 20 species on a day out with little trouble. The causeway along the lake also acts as a hotspot to late and sometimes overwintering warblers, such as Prairie Warbler and Black-and white Warbler. Each trip is definitely worth your while. [edit] RaritiesThe Outer Banks also act as a magnet for all sorts of rarities from Gray Kingbird to European Storm-Petrel. [edit] Check-listBirds you can see here include:
