Cisticola brunnescens has recently been split; Cisticola cinnamomeus (Pale-crowned Cisticola) is recognised by Clements[1], Dickinson [2], Gill & Wright[3] and Sinclair and Ryan[4].

There are six subspecies:[1]

  • C. b. mbangensis
  • Northern Cameroon (Adamawa Plateau)
  • C. b. brunnescens
  • Ethiopia and north-western Somalia
  • C. b. wambera
  • North-western Ethiopia (Wambera Plateau)
  • C. b. nakuruensis
  • Highlands of Kenya and northern Tanzania (west of Rift Valley)
  • C. b. hindii
  • Highlands of Kenya and northern Tanzania (east of Rift Valley)
  • C. b. lynesi
  • Highlands of western Cameroon
