Cisticola brunnescens has recently been split; Cisticola cinnamomeus (Pale-crowned Cisticola) is recognised by Clements[1], Dickinson [2], Gill & Wright[3] and Sinclair and Ryan[4].
There are six subspecies:[1]
- Northern Cameroon (Adamawa Plateau)
- Ethiopia and north-western Somalia
- North-western Ethiopia (Wambera Plateau)
- Highlands of Kenya and northern Tanzania (west of Rift Valley)
- Highlands of Kenya and northern Tanzania (east of Rift Valley)
- Highlands of western Cameroon
