Identification

16cm.

  • Glossy black head, mantle, scapulars and upper breast
  • Orange-red rump and uppertail-coverts
  • Blackish upperwing with orange-red wing-panel
  • Black central pair of tail feathers, rest of tail orange-red
  • Orange-red breast and upper flanks
  • White rest of underparts
  • Dark brown eye
  • Black bill and legs

Females have black areas replaced by smoky-brown, a yellowish rump, a smaller wing patch and a greyish-white to white throat and underparts.
Juveniles are undescribed.

Similar species

Darker head and back, no yellow in wing and white abdomen compared with Small Minivet. Smaller and with white abdomen compared to Scarlet Minivet.

Distribution

Found on Sumbawa and Flores in the Lesser Sundas, Indonesia.
A generally uncommon restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
It forms a superspecies with Small Minivet and Fiery Minivet.

Habitat

Found in open forest with sparse understorey. Also in primary forest and other forest types. From sea-level up to 1150m on Sumbawa and up to 1820m on Flores, but mainly below 500m.

Behaviour

Usually seen foragin in pairs or small groups, often in mixed-species flocks.

Diet

Feeds on small arthropods.

Breeding

Breeding season from April to June. No other information about breeding.

Movements

Presumably a resident species.
