Typical birds are grey-brown with spotted crown and upperside, rufous birds have more streaked crown and upperside. Southern birds seems to only include the grey morph.

Westernmost range of the Andes from Ecuador to northern Chile.

This is a monotypic species1.

This species has been split from the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.

Agricultural areas with larger trees.

Nocturnal but also partly diurnal. Song activity strongest at dusk, sometimes also at night
