9–10·5 cm (3½-4¼ in)

  • Rufous-chestnut crown and supercilium
  • Blackish lateral crown stripe
  • Grey face
  • Pale eyering
  • Pale wingbars

Distribution

This species has been found in China, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Hong Kong, Macau, In Asia, Myanmar, Indochina, In South Asia, Laos, In Southeast Asia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia

Taxonomy

This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 9 subspecies.

Subspecies

  • P. c. castaniceps: Eastern Himalayas (Nepal to Sikkim, Bhutan and north-eastern India)
  • P. c. collinsi: Myanmar (southern Shan States) to north-western Thailand
  • P. c. laurentei: South-western China (south-eastern Yunnan)
  • P. c. sinensis: Southern China (Shaanxi, Sichuan, north-western Fujian) to northern Laos and northern Vietnam
  • P. c. stresemanni: Southern Laos (Bolavens Plateau) and south-western Cambodia
  • P. c. youngi: Mountains of peninsular Thailand (south of Isthmus of Kra)
  • P. c. annamensis: Mountains of Vietnam (Langbian and Da Lat plateaux)
  • P. c. butleri: Mountains of Malay Peninsula
  • P. c. muelleri: Western Sumatra (Barisan Mountains)

Habitat

Subtropical humid montane forests with oak and rhododendron.

Behaviour

They forage in the upper canopy for tiny invertebrates.
