Similar Species
Like Green-crowned Plovercrest which has a shorter bill and whose male has a green crest and more bluish, less black (brighter) underparts. Females may be indistinguishable.
Distribution
South America: Eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) to southern Brazil
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Green-crowned Plovercrest.
Habitat
Atlantic forest and forest edges, observed at heights of 7200 feet. Moves to lower levels in the winter.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of nectar foraged from both native and introduced flowers.
Breeding
The occasional male will sing alone, but they generally perform at leks.
Vocalisation
Voice is described as a high ticking sound.
