Overview

It is 16 hectare area marked as a bird sanctuary on the Cauvery river in Mandya district, Karnataka, consisting of several islets which attract large numbers of nesting water birds, making it a popular tourist destination even outside of birders.

It is a nesting place for Painted Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Spot-billed Pelican, Black-headed Ibis, Oriental Darter, Open Billed Stork, Great, Medium and Eastern Cattle Egret, River Tern, Great Thick-knee and many other species.

The sanctuary has a robust population of mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris). It is also home to bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata), Indian flying foxes (Pteropus giganteus), smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata), Indian grey mongoose (Herpestes edwardsii), Indian flapshell turtles (Lissemys punctata), Bengal monitors (Varanus bengalensis) and Asian palm civets (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus).

Access and Facilities

The primary way of navigating the sanctuary is through guided boat tours which enable close range viewing of the nesting birds. However, they may be suspended on occasion due to flooding when water released from dams upstream. The area immediately adjacent to the main sanctuary has been developed into a park-like area, with seating and parking facilities, a small museum and a extremely small restaurant, as well as watchtowers and overlooks onto the river.
