25 cm. Red-brown head, neck and breast, paler throat, grey brown upperparts and underparts which have pale barring. The underwing is barred black and white, the bill green, and the legs grey-brown.

Moluccas, Lesser Sundas, Australia, and New Guinea.

[edit] Taxonomy

Some authorities (including Clements) list this as a monotypic species while others list four subspecies: tricolor, victa, maxima, and laeta.

Tropical rainforests and dense vegetation close to permanent wetlands.

[edit] Behaviour

The diet includes amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and molluscs.

It nests on or close to ground in dense vegetation. 3-5 dull-white eggs are laid and incubated for around 20 days.
