Western Africa: found in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

There are 2 subspecies^[1]:

• M. s. scutatus:

• Sierra Leone to Ghana and Benin

• M. s. scutopartitus:

• Southern Nigeria to south-western Cameroon

Rainforest, gallery forest, and old secondary growth.

[edit] Breeding

The nest is usually suspended from a palm frond, the entrance is via a long tube which is flared at the end.
