Identification

30-36 mm; hindwing tailed; blackish brown on upper with broad orange-red area on lower half of upper hind, in both sexes; under mainly white, with black spots and striking orange-red marginal band in underhind.

Distribution

India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and many parts of South-East Asia.

Taxonomy

Habitat

  1. Seen in moist deciduous to evergreen forests as well as urban gardens.
  2. Fond of flowers.

Behaviour

  1. Slow fluttering flight close to ground.
  2. Preferred larval food plant is, Kalenchoe.
  3. Recently reported to have spread its range to North Indian Himalayan foothills
