Identification
19cm. A large shrikebill.
- Glossy black forehead, face, chin and upper throat
- Warm orange-brown crown and upperparts
- Darker brown upperwing and tail
- Rich cinnamon-tinged rufous-brown underparts
- Blue-grey bill, long and vertically compressed and slightly hooked at tip
Females and immatures are duller and have a less distinctive facial mask.
Distribution
Endemic to Rennell Island in the southern Solomon Islands.
A restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Primary forest with dense undergrowth, also in regrowth areas.
Behaviour
Poorly known.
Forages in pairs or singly in understorey, also in mixed-species flocks.
No information about breeding.
A sedentary species.
