- Rhipidura albicollis
Identification
This species is about 17·5–20·5 cm (6¾-8 in) long.
It is identifiable by its long, fan-shaped tail which is edged in white, and its white supercilium and throat.
There is much plumage variation between subspecies.
Distribution
This species is found across tropical southern Asia from the Himalayas, India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia east to Borneo and Indonesia.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 9 subspecies[1]:
- R. a. canescens: Western Himalayas (Pakistan and Kashmir to western Nepal)
- R. a. albicollis: Himalayas (western Nepal and Sikkim)
- R. a. orissae: North-eastern India: Chota Nagpur plateau and north-eastern Ghats
- R. a. stanleyi: Eastern Himalayas to Assam and Myanmar
- R. a. celsa: South-eastern Tibet to southern China, Hainan, western Thailand and northern Indochina
- R. a. atrata: Southern Thailand to Malaya and Sumatra
- R. a. sarawacensis: Northern Borneo (Poi Mountains)
- R. a. kinabalu: Mountains of northern Borneo (Kinabalu to Murud and Mulu)
- R. a. cinerascens: Southern Indochina
Habitat
A wide variety of forests, including broadleafed woodlands, scrub and cultivation.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet is insectivorous. They hunt in the undergrowth and in the lower and middle stories. Occasionally going into the canopy.
Breeding
Females lay three eggs in a cup nest in a tree.
