Lepidocolaptes fuscicapillus

Identification

17–19 cm.

  • Slim down-curved bill
  • Rather uniform upperside
  • Strongly streaked underside

Variation

Subspecies layardi frequently shows a white supercilium.

Distribution

Southern Amazonia, in Brazil and northern Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Lineated Woodcreeper initially was split into four species. Later two of these (Rondonia Woodcreeper and Layard's Woodcreeper) were lumped together into the present species.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • L. f. fuscicapillus
  • South central Amazonia, in Brazil between the Madeira and Tapajós rivers, and in northern Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz)
  • L. f. layardi
  • Eastern Amazonian Brazil, east of the Tapajós River

Habitat

Amazonian forest below 800 m asl. Prefers mature forest or older second growth but also sometimes found in forest edge. Prefers using the canopy for foraging.

Behaviour

Readily joins mixed species flocks and searches for invertebrates.

Vocalisation

Song described as a slowing, descending series of clear whistles.
