Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Lamprotornis purpuroptera has two subspecies:1

  • L. p. aeneocephalus
  • Eritrea, Sudan and northern Ethiopia
  • L. p. purpuroptera
  • Southern Ethiopia to Somalia, southern Sudan, Uganda, western Kenya and Tanzania
