33-38cm. No ear tufts. Upper-parts rufous-brown barred with white, extensive white barring on nape and head. Under-parts white barred with brown. Facial disk rufous with dark eyes. Legs and feet orange-brown to cinnamon.

Chile, Argentina to Tierra del Fuego.

[edit] Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized: rufipes is widespread and sanborni is limited to Chiloé Island (sanborni not recognized by all authorities).
Chaco Owl has in the past been included in this species.

Dense moist montane forest and semi-open lowland forest.

[edit] Behaviour

The diet includes small mammals, birds and insects.

2-3 eggs laid in a tree hole.

The song reminds of the sound of someone laughing but trying to keep his mouth shot.
