Dark brown above, long tail and rufous crown, nape and ear coverts. Cinnamon brown rump and centre of wings, pale grey-brown underside with scalloped markings on its throat and chest. A light grey marking surrounds the eye and extends to the bill.

Coastal scrubs and thickets, and undergrowth in gullies in temperate rain forest.
